Praised for his "handsome, elegant bass" (New York Times), bass-baritone CRAIG PHILLIPS
is in steady demand on opera stages and in concert halls throughout the U.S. For his portrayal of Nardo in New York
City Opera's La finta giardiniera, the New York Sun singled-out Mr. Phillips as one of the "true lights of the
production", highlighting both his "clear lyric bass baritone" and "great talent for physical comedy." For Argenio in
Handel's Imeneo, The New York Times cited his "appealing, sturdy bass-baritone" in a cast of "fresh-voiced and
impressive artists."
Appearing with Glimmerglass Opera for six consecutive seasons in a wide range of repertoire, Mr. Phillips
distinguished himself as a gifted singing actor. His roles included Count Oscar in Offenbach's Bluebeard,
Raymond in Lucie de Lammermoor, The English Clerk in Britten's Death in
Venice, and, most recently, the Police Sergeant in The Pirates of Penzance. Elsewhere,
notable engagements include Rambaldo in La rondine with Sarasota Opera, Sam in
Un ballo in maschera with Florida Grand Opera, Pirate King in The Pirates of
Penzance with Nashville Opera, and Leporello in Don Giovanni with Pensacola Opera.
As a concert soloist, Mr. Phillips' credits include Bach's St. Matthew Passion with
The Washington Bach Consort, New York Collegium, and Musica Angelica Los Angeles with Orchestra Wiener Akademie;
Dvořák's Stabat Mater with the Oakland East Bay Symphony; Handel's
Messiah with the American Classical Orchestra, Concert Royal, and The Saint Thomas Choir
of Men and Boys; Raphael/ Adam in Haydn's Die Schöpfung with the Handel Choir of Baltimore;
Handel's Israel in Egypt with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra; and Stravinsky’s
Requiem Canticles with Gotham City Orchestra and Vox Vocal Ensemble.
An active performer in the early music scene, Mr. Phillips is a founding member of the male quartet
NEW YORK POLYPHONY. Specializing in
early and new music, New York Polyphony is gaining a reputation as one of the finest vocal chamber groups of a new generation. Their
debut CD, I sing the birth, was released on Avie Records September in 2007. Since then,
the disc has become a favorite of critics in both the U.S. and the U.K., garnering unanimous praise. Gramophone Magazine
called the disc "one of the season's best", citing New York Polyphony's "expert musicianship and fine vocal
resource." BBC Music Magazine named I sing the birth 'Editor's Christmas Choice'
for 2007. Calling it "...a disc for all seasons," London's Classic FM Magazine awarded the CD 5 stars--its highest rating.
